One rescued as wagon plunged into 3rd Mainland Bridge Lagoon

Tragedy was averted yesterdayin Lagos when a ToyotaSienna with registrationnumber BB974EKY veeredoff the popular third mainlandbridge into the lagoon, but timely effortsfrom rescuers salvaged the life of the driver.

The incident, which occurred at about10:30am, just after the monthly sanitation exercise in the state, forced entry intoLagos Island through Iyana Oworo into aheavy traffic.

Confirming the incident to Sunday Pilot, theGeneral Manager of the Lagos State EmergencyManagement Agency (LASEMA), Dr. OkeiOsayintolu, said the space wagon skid off thethird mainland bridge around Adekunle,inward Oworonsoki, but noted that the driver of the bus was rescued and moved to hospitalfor treatment, while the bus was pulled out ofthe shore by a construction firm crane.“We got an alert that a car veered into the lagoon on third mainland bridge and we quickly moved in with other rescue agencies.

With the support of the local divers andrescuers, we are able to save the driver of thecar and he is presently receiving treatment atthe hospital.
”According to an eyewitness, who identifiedhimself as Kazeem, the incident was a loneaccident, saying that “the beige colouredSienna space wagon had one of its tires busted,lost control and crashed against the concrete,metallic barriers before nose-diving into therivers underneath,”
he said. Aside LASEMA, a speed boat from the LagosState Waterways Board and other local diverspopularly known as ‘Ilaje’ fishermen joinedpart of the rescue effort.The car was removed from the lagoon atabout 2:35pm by Julius Berger cranes, with thedriver moved to General Hospital, Ikeja.
