Five arrested with N108m fake currencies

Five men were on Monday paraded by the Lagos State Police Command for printing local and foreign currencies.

Two of the suspects, Femi Jacob and Ramon Adeoye, were arrested at Ogunlana Street, Alagbado with eight printing machines and a large quantity of printed fake notes in Naira, Dollars, Pounds, Euros and Cedis totalling N8m.

Isaka Usman and Akeem Ayobado were also arrested at Ikorodu with 14 printing machines, one cutting machine and N100m fake notes. The fifth suspect, Onyeka Ibe, was allegedly an Anambra-based buyer, who usually comes to Lagos to buy fake currencies.

The state Command’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, said, “This syndicate has been in operation for over five years. Their customers are spread across several African countries like the Republic of Benin, Mali, Ghana, Togo, Liberia and Sierra Leone.“The Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Superintendent of Police Abba Kyari, got a tip-off about the operations of the syndicate some weeks ago and mounted surveillance at Jacob’s Alagbado residence.

It was Jacob’s confessional statement after his arrest that led to the arrest of Ayodabo who is the leader of the syndicate.“This case will eventually be handed over to operatives of Interpol because of the negative implications the fake currencies outflow might have had on the economies of the West African countries.”The CP said the cutting machine was owned by Ayodabo and procured from the Republic of BeninOne of the suspects, Ibe said, “I often come down to Oluwole Street in Lagos Island. That is where Ayodabo has his shop. I would spend N5,000 to get currency worth N100,000. I usually buy currency worth between N500,000 and N700,000.”
The fake notes which were on display during the parade looked real enough to have kept the syndicate in business for five years with customers spread across the continent.Adeoye told PUNCH METRO that he was arrested at Iyana Ipaja, adding, “I am just an errand boy, my duty was to deliver fake currencies to buyers. I was on my way to deliver fake notes worth N700,000 to one Ibrahim when I was arrested.

EFCC locates Ibori’s secret mansion in Lagos

he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday said it had located a mansion belonging to a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, in an upscale area of Lagos.

The commission said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujiaren, that the property was discovered on Thursday at No. 5, Alpha Beach Road, Lekki in Lagos by its operatives.

Ibori was convicted on April 18, 2012 by a United Kingdom crown court and sentenced to a13-year jail term for corruption and money laundering.
The EFCC said the property “is suspected to be one of the proceeds of money laundering for which the ex-governor was convicted in the UK.“The attachment of the property is the fallout of continued efforts by the anti- graft agency to trace, find and seize properties that were acquired with stolen funds by the former governor.“The property is a mansion with a mini reception at the ground floor and a detached ‘Boys Quarters’.“Two occupants of the house, Moses Abu and Kaycee Kasim, were interrogated and made useful statements.”
According to pictures released by the commission, the house also has a swimming pool.Items recovered from the house include sewing machines, mannequins and other personal effects.
They were all packed in cartons and sealed by EFCC operatives before being moved to its office in Lagos. This is the latest property owned by Ibori which has located and attached.

In July 2012, the United States Department of Justice secured a restraining order against more than $3m looted funds and a mansion in Houston, Texas, U.S owned by Ibori.

The department got the powers through an application filed under seal on May 16, 2012, in a U.S District Court in the District of Columbia, to register and enforce two orders from United Kingdom courts against more than $3m in corruption proceeds related to Ibori. This was announced by Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton in a statement on the U.SDOJ website.

“The application, which was filed under seal on May 16, 2012, in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, seeks to restrain assets belonging to Governor Ibori and Bhadresh Gohil, Ibori’s former English solicitor, that are proceeds of corruption.“Specifically, it seeks to restrain a mansion in Houston and two Merrill Lynch brokerage accounts. U.S District Judge Lamberth granted the application and issued a restraining order under seal on May 21, 2012.

“The department was notified today that its application to unseal the restraining order was granted.“The United States is working with the United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police Service to forfeit these corruption proceeds,” it said.

Tuface Idibia, Annie Macaulay and jamboree of their wedding date

For months, fans of power couple Tuface Idibia and Annie Macaulay have been tossed back and forth, left and right  like a ping-pong ball, over the exact date and venue of the hot celebrities lavish white wedding; rumours, speculations and counter speculations have gone by since their quiet traditional wedding ceremony which took place at Annie’s parent’s home in Ajah, Lagos with one story at the thick of it all even claiming Tuface allegedly said there would be no lavish white wedding so as not to hurt his other baby mamas, yet no one was satisfied.
Then, news washed up online that February 14, 2013 had been chosen as the D-day, exactly one year after Annie said yes to her man at a nightclub in Lagos. The self styled investigators quoted sources who they say virtually ‘lived’ in Tuface and Annie’s minds and there was a resounding sigh of relief from many.

Well that gist is turning out not to be true.New information emerging has it that Tuface Idibia has plans for Valentine’s day and it is not a wedding. The Benue born star has concerts lined up for him that week including the 14th and he could be honouring them all.His wife Annie who recently appeared on Africa Magic entertainment programme Jara also didn’t give any indication of a wedding coming up soon.

With the Febuary 14 story trashed, another thread of rumour has again emerged. This one states that the couple may be doing it somewhere in the middle east and that family and friends would be flown on a special chartered plane to the strictly by invitation wedding. This is further fueled by pictures posted recently by Annie on Instagram as she holidayed at a resort in Dubai.

Tuface warned right from the beginning that his dealings with Annie would be very secret. His traditional marriage almost passed un-noticed  and he is trying to do the same with his white wedding.

If anyone truly knows Tuface, it should be the fact that he is a man who keeps his word. His white wedding would hold secretly and quietly.

N15m hidden under car seats

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted over N15 million cash hidden under the seats and footmats of a car with three nationals of Niger Republic. The Nigeriens were nabbed while entering the country. Apparently aware that the trunk of the car would be searched at the various checkpoints, the smart Nigeriens neatly stashed the cash where security agents hardly check.

Comptroller of Customs in-charge of Katsina/Kaduna Area Command, Yusuf Umar, who paraded the suspects identified as Abdulrasheed Usman (22), his brother Salisu (21), and Bishir Abdullahi (30), before newsmen in Katsina at the weekend, confirmed that nothing was found in the boot of the suspects’ car, a Honda Academy, with Nigerian registration number, ABUJA ABJ 602 AE, when they were intercepted at Makera checkpoint on Jibia –Katsina road. Mr. Umar stated that the suspects, who could be financial agents of a Bureau De Change operator, took a bush path into Nigeria to evade scanning machines of the Customs Service at Jibia international border.

He said the non-declaration of the cash carried by the suspects was contrary to the provisions of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, which states that transportation of cash or negotiable instruments in excess of USD10,000 or its equivalent by individuals in or out of the country shall be declared to the Nigeria Customs Service. He stated that the suspects contravened the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) of 2004 and the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act by failing to declare amount to officers of the Customs.According to him, the relevant provisions of the Act were aimed at prohibiting financing of terrorism and laundering of the proceeds of a crime or an illegal act. “The claim of these suspects in this case that they are financial agents to Yaura BDP of Wapa, Kano, makes them liable. Who is Yaura BDP, Wapa? Our investigation is ongoing to ascertain the depth of involvement and occupational identity of the suspects.“The alibi of collecting the money in Jibiya while not travelling with a Nigerian companion cannot hold water.

It is my sincere belief that the Nigeria Customs Service and other relevant sister agencies will get to the root of this matter so as to ascertain the purpose for the movement of this money,” the Comptroller said in a prepared statement made available to reporters.

30 die in PIPELINE fire

Disaster struck early yesterday morning at Arepo Village, Owode in Ogun State when a fire outbreak roasted no fewer than 30 suspected vandals allegedly siphoning petroleum products from a ruptured Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline. Sunday Sun learnt that the fire which started at about 2am was sparked off by vandals who were arguing over who is eligible to fetch from the ruptured pipeline.
It was in the heat of the argument that one of them accidentally released a bullet that led to several explosions. However, operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, who were on patrol rushed to the scene to avert further disaster. We learnt that it was in the process that they arrested a medical doctor, Dr Adegboyega (first name withheld by us) and one of the survivors Sunday Reuben on their way to the hospital.Dr Adegboyega was alleged to be smuggling one of the survivor, who happens to be a vandal to his private clinic for treatment. Confirming the arrest, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the Task Force, said that the explosion started at about 2am on Saturday. “Shortly after the explosion, policemen led by Sector Commander, Lagos, DSP Onaghise Osayande, cordoned off the area to reduce casualties while they awaited the arrival of fire fighters to put out the fire.

It was in the process that they stumbled into a jeep carrying one of the survivors and a medical doctor who was on his way to the hospital. In the course of interrogation, we discovered that the survivor was one of those who participated in the killing of those NNPC officials last year. “Sometime in August, 2012, there was a firebreak which was caused by suspected vandals who burst the pipeline to siphon petroleum products at Arepo Village.” Ibadin said: “Fire fighters are on the ground while we have provided adequate security for any unforeseen attack.

Meanwhile most of the survivors are on the run knowing full well that they are criminals. Reuben is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital”. Groaning in pain, Reuben sobbed that so many of them who were blown away by the explosion where still alive and dying. In his words: “I was in my house when Suleiman my friend called me that there is a job at Arepo creeks. He asked me to look for a canoe and come with as many gallons as I can carry. Shortly after I arrived, I saw people arguing while some were fighting before I heard a gun shot. The next thing was an explosion. I was lucky that I wasn’t close to the ruptured pipeline. It was the heat of the fire that affected me. I managed to run to my boat where my mother was waiting. Iya Olabode, our neighbour called a doctor who was about taking me to the hospital when we were arrested by the police.” When asked the number of persons at the creek, Reuben said: “There are so many of us both men and women. We are more than 30 persons over there and most of them are still inside that fire.

Most of them are still in the creeks dying, please help them.”’ Meanwhile, the medical doctor, Adegboyega who is currently battling to exonerate himself insists that he was simply acting according to his oath to protect life. He claimed that he was invited by a customer, Iya Olabode to attend to a patient in her house at Abule Oba, Ikorodu area of Lagos. “I have been a family doctor to Iya Olabode for the past three years. So when she called me that there is an emergency, I quickly rushed to her house where I saw Reuben badly burnt. I advised her that we should take the man to my clinic for better treatment. We were on our way when the police accosted us”, the doctor explained. We report that Doctor Adeboyega was given an opportunity to call Iya Olabode to help vindicate him but he got the shock of his life when he called Iya Olabode on phone to come and help him.It was gathered that her reply was: “Doctor, I don’t know what you are talking about. I only asked you to come and treat a patient and make money. You want me to come and also be arrested because I allowed a pipeline vandal to stay in my house”. Iya Olabode later switched off her phone. Meanwhile, scarcity of fuel looms in Lagos and Ogun state as NNPC has since stopped the flow of PMS through Arepo pipeline pending when the ruptured pipeline would be repaired. When contacted, the Information Officer of the National Emergency Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye told Sunday Sun that only the agency and the NNPC knew the exact route to the scene of the fire, adding that none of the two outfits could access the area as at yesterday evening.

He said that the exact number of casualties was yet to be ascertained and hinted that NEMA and the NNPC would visit the scene of the fire today at about 9 am for accurate assessment of the incident. He said that the supply from the area had been stopped to,“suffocate the fire.” The NEMA spokesman appealed to Nigerians to see oil pipelines as their property and protect them against vandals pointing out that the same pipelines had been vandalized about four times.

Boko Haram leader caught in former Rep’s house

Another breakthrough came the way of security agents in their confrontation with members of the dreaded Jamaatu Ahlil Sunna Lidawati wal Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram, with the arrest of one of  the sect’s suspected  leaders, Hassan Pagi BUKAR, in the residence of a 2003-2007 member of the House of Representatives (names withheld).

The Boko Haram alleged leader was, according to sources, arrested along with the security guard of the erstwhile lawmaker.Although the one-time member of the House of Reps was said to have been briefly arrested and interrogated, he has since been  a daily guest of the security agency that effected the arrest.

The arrest was reportedly  made in the Gwarimpa area of the Federal Capital territory, FCT, Abuja.Sunday Vanguard  learnt, last night, that the arrest and interrogation of Bukar had started yielding results. For instance, the suspect reportedly disclosed,  upon interrogation, that his brief as a sect member was to “carry out robbery activities by dispossessing members of the public of their cars”.

The security guard in the former House of the Reps member’s residence  (who was described as a mere gateman) was said to have been “employed from Sokoto”.
During further interrogation of Bukar, Sunday Vanguard was made to understand that the suspect disclosed that the cars used for suicide bombings by the sect were stolen vehicles.
One of the very indicting statements of Bukar, the  source said, “was that he implicated the former Rep by saying that he also buys some of the cars from him (Bukar) when they are stolen”

Shock: Passengers Watched In Amazement As Snake Clings To Plane On Air

It was not quite a “Snakes on a Plane” scenario, but passengers on a Qantas jet watched in amazement as a three-metre python clung to the outside of their aircraft during a flight.
The Australian carrier said the flight from the Queensland city of Cairns to Port Moresby, capital of the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea, took off early Thursday morning with the unregistered passenger tucked into its wing.
“The snake was seen by passengers once (the plane) reached cruising altitude,” a Qantas spokesman told AFP.“It was still on the aircraft when it arrived in Port Moresby but it had died by that stage.”Once they spotted it on the wing, passengers watched as the reptile engaged in a life-and-death struggle to maintain its grip on the plane despite the winds and chilly altitude temperatures for the two-hour journey.

The hard fighting snake made it to the aircraft’s destination, and didn’t fall off on the way, but it was dead already.Passenger Robert Weber told Fairfax Media Friday that while people at the front of the plane were unaware of the python, those at the back were “all totally focused on the snake and how it might have got onto the aircraft”.“There was no panic. At no time did anyone stop to consider that there might be others on board,” Weber said.

He added that the snake had been nestled neatly at first, but once the wind caught the end of its tail, it was “pulling him straight out” and from then on it became a hopeless “life-and-death struggle”.“I felt quite sad for it, really,” he said.An expert said the snake was probably a scrub python, Australia’s longest snake and one common in northern Queensland.Qantas said it had never heard of anything similar happening before, adding that there was no way the reptile could have accessed the cabin.

Unlike the 2006 “Snakes on a Plane” movie starring Samuel L. Jackson, this reptile did not affect the flight. [AFP]

More Troubles For D’Banj As Kanye West Set To Drop Him From G.O.O.D Music

It is now being speculated within the music industry in hush tones that D’Banj may been shown the exit door at Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label which D’Banj claims he is still at.
According to information gathered from reports and some industry sources, all may not be too well between D’Banj and his American boss.
What Nigeriafilms.com scooped reveals that Kanye was never happy with the split between D’Banj and Don Jazzy in early 2012. We gathered that Kanye actually signed Don Jazzy to produce D’Banj for his record label, but with the split between them, it was no longer possible for Don Jazzy to perform his obligation of making ‘good’ beats for D’Banj.
Now that D’Banj took a step further to sign J-Sleek as his music producer, what sources in D’Banj’s camp reveal to industry sources is that Kanye is not pleased with J-Sleek’s production prowess and he sees D’Banj’s new collection of songs as weak.

What some tale-bearers are saying now is that Kanye is disappointed at D’Banj as his (Kanye)initial quest of storming African music through the duo of former Mohits Records is has been defeated and D’Banj’s new singles are no where match what convinced him to sign on the two African superstars when he signed them in 2011.

There are indications that D’Banj may consider reconciling with Don Jazzy or lose his deal with Kanye. Though we couldn’t confirm if D’Banj would consider the first option as we were told that his (D’Banj) ego might be a big obstacle is making the first option become a reality. We are still digging deep into the story and we would serve you our further findings.

Explosion rocks Lagos oil tank farm

A huge explosion at the MRS terminal at the Tin Can Island Port yesterday shook the entire Apapa area and its environs to its foundation, sending residents to scamper for safety. Official reports said no life was lost but four persons were seriously injured in the explosion, which sent shockwaves to people’s psyche, buildings and installations in the environs.

I learnt that the explosion, which occurred at about 11.40am was sparked off by a welding activity on board a self-propelled barge, which was alleged to be loaded with petroleum products. Eyewitnesses told us that the fire burnt for close to thirty minutes before the explosion saying surprisingly the fire could not be contained by the company before the let off.

It was gathered that the impact of the explosion threw off persons conducting the welding on board the barge, and that the whole Tin Can port and its environs quake with the explosions. Unconfirmed reports said many commuters on the Apapa-Oshodi Road leading to the port fled from buses, saying many people were wounded in the stampede that followed the impact. Officials of MRS did not allow anybody into the jetty, the scene of the explosion but the Executive Director, Shipping Trading Operation, Mr. Marco Storarin confirmed that the fire erupted from a barge inside the jetty, adding that through the intervention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) the number of casualties was stemmed.

He said there were no casualties except for damages to equipment and the building, adding, “we do not yet have reasons but the ship was coming on the water front; as at now there are no operations to ascertain the real cause of the fire outbreak. It is not true that there are death casualties,” he said. He, however, refused to comment on the cause of the fire. NEMA Information Officer, South-West, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident said the tanker on the barge exploded around 11.45am which had five persons injured but with no death recorded. He said the reason for the explosion could not be ascertained, adding that the situation was under control through the help of the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service and Ruhamaniya Oil and Gas Fire Services. A lot of people who spoke to us believed that MRS officials were economical with the truth concerning the casualty rate.

Kunle Salawu, an eyewitness said from the way the terminal was designed a lot of people must have died. Some people who were at the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal said at the time the explosion occurred, all the buildings around the area quaked which suggested that many buildings may collapse from the impact of the explosion in the near future.
Also, at the ports and Cargo Terminal, those around said the explosion shattered window and door glasses as well as affected some of the facilities. The office of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Union located near the MRS Terminal was also affected. A lot of people wondered why it took the company so long to react to the fire incident saying the explosion could have been avoided if the response was faster. An eyewitness said: “I saw the fire and I saw the smoke. It took more than 30 minutes. Then there was this explosion and we thought we were dead.Within this period there was no fire service intervention. We heard they were using fire extinguishers to stop the fire. “How could you use fire extinguisher to stop fire of such magnitude?” Unconfirmed report said the company recently sacked about 45 per cent of its experienced workforce who could have handled some of the sophisticated equipment and employed inexperienced persons to save funds. Musa Ilya, assistant general manager, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), said the company was yet to ascertain the reason for the fire outbreak, saying they were investigating the incident.

Lagos light rail project to be ready in June - Fashola

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Tuesday undertook an extensive tour of projects across the State just as he disclosed that the first phase of the State's Light Rail Project, from
Iganmu to Marina in Central Lagos, would be completed in June this year.Projects inspected by the Governor during the tour that lasted the entire day include the Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2 Light Rail Stations, on-going projects at the Lagos State University (LASU), Maternal and Child Care Centre, FESTAC, Okota-Ago Palace Road, Ejigbo-Ajao Link Bridge, Network of roads around Jimoh Ajao Street, Igando HOMS and Resettlement Relief Camp, Igando, on-going projects at Alimosho General Hospital (School of Nursing and Hostel among others) and Samuel Jinadu Street in Markaz area of Orile Agege among others.
Speaking at the Iganmu Light Rail Station where he also inspected the tracks already laid for the rail and the coach engine positioned as well as flagged off the Track Laying commencement, Governor Fashola said while the first phase of the project would be ready in June, work on the rail would continue to Okokomaiko even as the expansion of the Lagos Badagry Expressway continues. He told newsmen, "You know we have the two projects linked together, the road expansion and the Light Rail simultaneously. And now we are trying to see how we can take the Rail from the National Theatre to Marina. Hopefully, when that is done, we can heave a sigh of relief. Though there is still work to be done, but so far so good"."This is what we do with the money which we borrow; we do not borrow money to pay salaries, we don't borrow money to run our overhead. We are investing it in infrastructure. This is the type of transportation that I dream for this country; this is the type of transportation that I dream for this State and not mass transportation by motorcycles", the Governor said.He recalled his visit to Ajah Ferry Station recently saying the station links with the Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu as well as the one in Mile 2 adding, "This is what we have been talking about. It may be taking sometime but this is the dream we have, it is manifesting itself more clearly".
Noting that China opened what is, perhaps, the fastest high speed rail in the world that covers about 300 kilometres per hour, Governor Fashola declared, "Why can't that happen here? It is really no rocket science, if we can't invent it, we can buy it and that is what we are doing. We are buying facilities to have it installed here".Governor Fashola, who had earlier addressed some residents of Iganmu at the venue on the need to keep the surroundings of the project clear of refuse, stressed the need for them to take ownership of the project, pointing out that no traveller on the train would like to be seeing refuse on the right and left sides of the Light Rail when it finally becomes functional."
I have spoken to the residents and I am sure we will see some changes. They have to change their refuse management habit", the Governor said disclosing that the State Government is planning a housing estate of about 1008 flats at Ijora."People should be able to live close to the train station and walk about a kilometre to their homes. So it is a dream, it is beginning to come together. This is what we saw and we will deliver it", he said.At the Lagos State University, Ojo, where he inspected the Students' Arcade, the Law Theatre, Main Library, Senate Building, School of Transportation and other projects, Governor Fashola promised that most of the on-going projects would be completed soon adding that the Government is working with the new Governing Council of the institution to upgrade its infrastructure."We are working with the Governing Council that we set up. They already have their own plans too that they are going to present to me. So we are on the move", the Governor said adding that the only issue that remains to be addressed is the people who have encroached on the land belonging to the institution.
According to the Governor, "It is either they leave that land or they come and pay to LASU because that is where LASU will make its own money to fund its own activities, pay its lecturers, manage its schools as a self-supporting independent university deserving of the Centre of Excellence".Also speaking to newsmen after inspecting the Mile 2 Jetty, Governor Fashola, who recalled that the Jetty was built by first civilian governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, noted that when he visited the Jetty three years ago "all sorts of things had happened here. People had actually built on the property, Government property", adding, "It was a walk back"."But we have reclaimed the premises back. The boats in the water were left there and they are aluminum boats. Aluminum boats don't die; so before the end of this year, those five boats will be back fully retrofitted, with new engines, new seats and new navigation system. And so we are adding another five boats to our Lagos Ferry Service in addition to the two we got in December. That gives us seven", he said.
Noting that there are other operators who are running metro ferry plaza, Governor Fashola declared, "If we finish the retrofitting of the Mile 2 boats and Mile 2 Terminal, it means that the old waterway running from this place to Marina is back and available to people of Amuwo Odofin, Mile 2 and all others and this will extend now to Oke-Afa where we are building another jetty in the course of this year"."This jigsaw is fitting in.
So that means we can get down at Mile 2 Rail Terminus which is about 300 metres from here and take the ferry boat to Marina. This is the intermodal transportation I am talking about. It is beginning to fall into place", the Governor said.Speaking on the Okota Road expansion, the Governor said the community has outgrown the road and there is a need to expand it, adding that it explains the need for increasing infrastructure investment. He added that the population has grown many times past where the government did not build infrastructure to support the road, stressing that as government moved to address that deficit the population has not stopped growing."So, we are trying to expand Okota Road and some of the properties needed to give way. Everybody wants a good road but no one wants it to pass through his house. So, some of the tenements took us to court and I think we have settled out of court now and we have to pay compensation".He reiterated that these are part of the things that the members of the public are not privy as he has heard several complaints that the road is very slow, adding that the basic reason why the job has been slow is because a citizen took the State Government to court. On the new Relief Resettlement Camp at Igando, the Governor said irrespective of how the government has continually advocated for planning, safety and avoidance of accidents and prepared, accidents will happen. He added that there already exists a Resettlement Camp in Agbowa with which the state could respond quickly when it had the problem of flooding in Ajegunle in Ikorodu about two years ago.He said the camp at Igando is the second being built by the state government explaining that while it recognizes that accidents will happen it doesn't want to be caught by surprise as the government is always thinking ahead."We think ahead as we plan to be safe. We also plan that accidents might happen, we should save lives by putting people in a place where government can start thinking of dealing with repairing of roads and repairing other things. We don't pray for accidents but we prepare for the worst and hope for the best", the Governor said.On the progress of work on the Lagos Badagry Road expansion, the Governor stated that contrary to insinuations in certain quarters a lot of work is actually going on.
According to him what is going on now is a soil replacement process as shown by the observed heaps of sands because the soil in the area has become unsuitable having been used as a refuse dump over the years. He said there is also a pipe network just as there is a need to take care of a gas pipeline and the relocation of all the electricity cable, explaining that construction workers cannot just go in and remove PHCN cable without getting the PHCN involved."We are at the stage where we are relocating facilities. That is why to the uninformed, it would appear as if we have stopped work. We have not stopped work, relocation of those facilities is going on", the Governor said.Governor Fashola also said the issue of relocation is also on going as compensation is being given to people who have had to give up their properties so that the work can get done."So, but be very sure that casting and preparation of all the concrete is going on behind the scene. By the time we finish the relocation and the contractor moves to positioning the things, it would be quicker than you think and you would think it happened overnight, Governor Fashola said.On a probable date of completion, the Governor said he could not give a date of completion as it is tied to so many things including challenges that are very observable and those that are not very observable but surfaces on the field and have to be solved.
He also identified funding as one of the determinants, adding that it explains one of the reasons why he went to the House of Representatives to appeal for the approval of a second tranche of 200 million dollars loan out of the 600 million dollars World Bank loan which the government intends to use part of to finance the project. On media reports about plans to demolish about 50 houses in Jakande Estate in Isolo and Gatankowa Market, the Governor said when he went to Gatankowa, what he said was that a committee would be set up and that the present occupants should work with the Ministry of Physical Planning on the issue. He also reminded that the people of Gatankowa had no rights to the land as it belonged to government but in spite of that the government was going to work with the present occupants to redevelop the place in a way that they will not be displaced."People should also understand that we don't just wake up and go and demolish. There is a process. We will not demolish a building unless it was built without authorization. We would not demolish a building unless it is injurious to human life and if we have to choose between property and life, this government will choose life first", the Governor said.He said the reports are sensational stories that make headlines and also sell papers, adding that even for argument sake if it is assumed that it is true, the government won't just demolish the structures and go away wondering why the reports didn't highlight that government is planning to redevelop structures that constitute hazards to their inhabitants. He buttressed his point with one of the places visited at Ajao Ejigbo where in order to save some properties, a bridge project was split into two, adding that government does not get credit for such action which cost more. While also citing the example of Dolphin Scheme, the Governor said three years ago, a new drain was built instead of demolishing properties in order to deflood the area."All the sensationalism about demolition is not consistent with what we are doing. We are building over 400 housing units here, we are building another 400 plus in Ogba, about 500 in Sangotedo and over 600 in Agbowa", Governor Fashola informed."We are starting from Ajara in Badagry. I also told you about what we are going to do in Ijora from this year with about 1008 housing units. That is not consistent with a government that is demolishing. We are builders and not demolishers. We are focused; we know where the target is. We are locked on target and that is why we are all out here as a team from our Local Governments to House of Assembly, members of the House of Representatives. This government is tight, it knows where its goal is and it knows what its people expect of it and would deliver it".On what the reaction of the Governor would be to criticisms that even clearly people oriented projects like jetties, roads, light rail project and Maternal and Child Care Centers are elitist, he said the message to be taken away is that when one becomes the issue and begins to get things done, it is going to generate a lot of controversy. He said governments that have not delivered on the promise that they have made to people would have probably resigned themselves to fate because they could not perform."So, when a government begins to do things, you begin to do things, you begin to hear all sorts of comments. Oh it's too expensive, oh the contractor is his friend, but if it did not happen, there is nothing to talk about. We understand that but that will not stop us from doing what we need to do", he explained."We were at the Maternal and Child Care Hospitals in Alimosho and Amuwo Odofin. You will see their state of readiness. Now, we are testing equipment and we are recruiting the staff preparatory to take off. You also saw the school of Nursing in Alimosho which should start operation sometime this year ".
He added that the personnel training would be the next step and would involve feeding all the MCCs that the State Government has now and also train nurses who are passionate and who care because that is the real challenge in healthcare globally now.Governor Fashola stated that treatment is only halfway now as care is the real issue as exemplified by what the National Health Insurance Scheme is doing by asking patients to fill a form indicating when they have been discharged who has cared for them most which is a measure of service delivery. He also informed that he was at Orile -Agege behind Markaz to inspect a site because the report he got was that it was being put to unacceptable uses which necessitated his including it on his itinerary for the inspection."We have seen but we will go back to our security meeting and take appropriate actions now that we have clear appraisal of what is going on there", he explained. The Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Hon (Mrs) Adejoke Orelope –Adefulire, members of the State Executive Council and was rereceived at each point of visit by Local Government Chairmen including Chairman of Apapa -Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Dr Adedayo Adesola, Ojo Local Government, Hon Mursiq Durosinmi, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, member of the House of Representatives representing Oshodi -Isolo Federal Constituency, Hon Hakeem Muniru, members of the State House of Assembly including, Hon Mufutau Egberongbe representing Apapa 1, and Hon Lanre Ogunyemi representing Ojo II.

Vessel From Russia With Guns

No fewer than 15 Russian crew of MV Myre SeaDiver, a vessel alleged to have sailed into Nigeria carrying arms have been handed over to the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police. Handing over the men to Mr. Zuberu Muazu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police from the SFU, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, Commodore Martin Njoku said the process was to enable the police carry out further investigation.

He said the Nigerian Navy had performed the preliminary stage of the investigation and had discovered that the vessel was carrying 14 assorted AK 47 rifles with 3, 643 ammunition and 20 Berneli MRI 20 barrel with 4, 955 ammunition, adding that the vessel had no permission to be in the territorial waters of the country at the time of arrest.

He said the handover of the crew to the SFU was a directive from the ‘higher authorities’ in Abuja, saying that MV Myre SeaDiver flying Cook Island flag with Russian crew was intercepted within the Lagos roadstead on suspicion of carrying arms and ammunition.Commodore Njoku told Daily Sun that the vessel was escorted to the Naval base for investigation, which it was gathered started since October 2012 when it was arrested.

We further learnt from independent source that the vessel, before arriving Lagos, had left the Port of Toliara Madagascar en-route Senegal with a 15-man crew. The source told us that the vessel made a detour to Lagos on September 20, 2012 for replenishment and crew change, which involved the change of the vessel’s captain who was identified as Mr. Makaov Mikhail. Mikhail, it was learnt flew out of Nigeria, apparently to Russia on September 20 last year, but the new captain of the vessel who was identified as Zhelyazkov Andrey said the vessel could not sail due to some mechanical defects which had to be rectified. The captain said the arms and ammunition discovered onboard were for personal protection and the protection of the ship.

In his reaction after the vessel, her crew and the weapons were handed over to the him, the police representative, Mr. Muazu, DCP, said they were commencing investigation immediately but said he did not know when investigation would be concluded. However, while the handover was taking place, officials from the Russian Embassy in Lagos, who were allegedly making frantic effort to get the crew and the ship released arrived the scene, but were kept away by the Nigerian officials.

They told Us that they were not talking to the media to avoid complicating the issue, especially after reports had said effort were on between Abuja and Moscow to get them released. Another report said the men had been released after a telephone conversation between Russian and Nigerian foreign ministers.
